15 Puzzle: rules and examples

Take a moment with 15 Puzzle before moving to another game. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Practice beyond the first move

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

Understand the aim

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Work through the instructions

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Keyboard and screen controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

An example before you play

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Where a round can go wrong

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
